Happy Lunar New Year!

According to Chinese astrology, 2019 is the Year of the Pig.

Pigs are sociable animals, who enjoy life's abundance — and pig years are thought to be joyous times, full of friendship, luck and good fortune. How fitting that we are sharing this newsletter with friends, and that we've stuffed it with a wealth of lucky doll-scale finds from our recent travels.

Enjoy!

Happy Lunar New Year — and happy Year of the Pig from Lee & Pearl! Pig years are thought to be joyous times, full of friendship, luck and good fortune. Both "Lee" and "Pearl" are always on the hunt for interesting and unique doll scale items.

Sure, the toy aisles are great — especially with the addition of the Our Generation® and My Life As® lines, which have produced such fun items lately as unicycles and vintage arcade machines for 18 Inch American Girl®-size dolls. But many of our favorite doll-scale accessories were not originally intended for dolls, and were found instead in thrift stores, gift shops, trade shows, antique malls, street fairs and pretty much everywhere else.

For example, while enjoying the sights, sounds and foodstuffs at a local Asia Fest, Pearl spotted a table full of brightly colored Lion Dance puppets, made of molded plastic and paper, and covered in sparkly fabrics, faux fur, sequins, pom-poms, pipe cleaners and crystals.

Of course, we had to have one. Though the puppets seemed a little small for 18 inch/American Girl-size dolls, Pearl thought they might be perfect for 14 1/2 inch Wellie Wishers™.

And indeed, they are!

In proper Lion Dance fashion, two dolls fit under the puppet — one in front operating the head, and one in back, under the fur-trimmed fabric canopy.

The size is so perfect that they don't even need the puppet strings. The front doll herself holds up the lion head, as the edges sit neatly right on her hands as she reaches up.

Our girls look so perfect, one almost expects them to engage in some traditional Lion Dance acrobatics!

The puppet has fur-trimmed legs attached, so we decided not to make ruffled pants for the dolls and dressed them instead in sleek black dancers' unitards, made using our Pattern 1051: Ballet Basics for 14 1/2 Inch Dolls.

Then we added leather-soled dance shoes from our Pattern 1075: Ballet Slippers for 14 1/2 Inch Dolls.

Finally, we had a few minutes to spare, so we made coordinating earrings for our lead dancer, as well!

One of fun things about our Introduction to Jewelry Making for Vinyl Play Dolls Craft Guide eBookalong with being able to confidently pierce your own dolls' ears at home, as we did — is that once you've worked through the basic skills, and have the basic tools we've described, you can make the perfect finishing touch for any outfit in no time flat.

Seriously, these earrings took about two minutes, from start to finish.

And here's the best part — though it'll be another year before Asia Fest returns, you can buy the Lion Dance puppets on Amazon as well!

AND HERE'S THE LINK FOR ANOTHER.

There are many more listed, and we can't vouch for any particular seller or model. But they all look very similar to the puppet we used in our photos!

Recently, Pearl spent a fun day at the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo, the oldest consecutively running livestock show and rodeo.

The official name of this annual event held in Fort Worth since 1896 is the "Southwestern Exposition and Livestock Show," but this transplanted SoCal girl likes to call it...

Cowboy Disneyland!!!

Recently, Lee & Pearl spent a fun day at the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo, the oldest consecutively running livestock show and rodeo. Truly, this show is a blast. There are rows and rows of displays in barn after barn after barn, stretching right through the center of the Fort Worth cultural district, with arenas and expositions and auctions and competitions that never seem to end.

Along with a daily professional rodeo in a giant Art Deco arena, the Stock Show has lots of free demonstrations in constant rotation throughout the site. Pearl walked into the sheep barn just as one of those shows was getting started — and it was one of the best-attended, most exciting competitions we saw.

We learned that sheep showing is a popular 4-H project, and it was such fun seeing all the young people showing off their beautiful animals!

Later, while Pearl was browsing the trade show booths in one of the big halls, she spotted this marvelous little alpaca fleece sheep in the Lael Alpaca booth.

Suddenly consumed with the desire to have the Lee & Pearl dolls show sheep of their own, Pearl whipped out her tape measure (don't leave home without it), checked the scale against her photos — and found a perfect match!

To get our new sheep ready for the show ring, Pearl researched sheep halters online, opened a few jump rings, and made a doll-scale version out of 1/4" black elastic and a length of jewelry chain.

Seriously, if you have our Introduction to Jewelry Making for Vinyl Play Dolls Craft Guide eBook, you can make all kinds of wonderful things exactly when you need them!

Next, Pearl made a long-sleeve T-shirt using our Pattern 1001: Unisex T-Shirts and pulled coordinating Pattern 1004: Cargo Shorts and a Pattern 1008: Ball Cap from our pattern sample bins.

As a final touch, Pearl added a homemade heat transfer motif to the t-shirt, to honor our time at the Stock Show.

Our final find has potential Forth Worth Stock Show connections as well, though we found it in an antiques mall in nearby Benbrook.

When Lee & Pearl found this 100% accurate, awesomely detailed, 18 inch American Girl doll scale, tooled leather saddle at a local antiques mall, our jaws dropped. Though the ladies at the mall were happy to sell it to us, no one had any idea where it came from — or why such an amazing thing might exist. If anyone recognizes this tiny saddle, we would LOVE to hear about it!

Yes, that is a 100% accurate, awesomely detailed, doll-scale tooled leather saddle.

If your jaw dropped looking at that picture, ours did too the moment we spotted it sitting in a booth.

It's clearly doll scaled, but it also appears to be, to put it bluntly — used. The fleece lining of the saddle looks like it has been worn on something other than plastic. Like, maybe a tiny horse...?

The best suggestion we've heard so far is that it could be an actual saddle, used by a dog-riding monkey that traditionally appears in the parade that opens the Fort Worth Stock Show.

Of course, it could also be some incredibly complicated project made for no particular reason by a talented local leatherworker. Tandy Leathercraft has been headquartered in Fort Worth for a long time.

Come to think of it, we should bring the saddle to the Tandy Leather Museum some day to see if they know anything about it. If they do, we'll let you know!
