Meet the Lee & Pearl™ workroom assistants and enjoy our review of the Our Generation® Healthy Paws Vet Clinic for dolls!

One year ago today, "Pearl" brought five tiny feral kittens from the shrubbery outside the Lone Star workroom inside, raised them up, and found them permanent, loving homes — mostly with us.

We love our new workroom assistants — Tally and Galadriel in Texas and Tabs in Virginia — but we're completely full up now. With Kitten Season raging in the bushes all around, that makes us nervous.

Don't you love that segue into doll play — and don't you LOVE this veterinary office for dolls? This is one of our favorite recent Target / Our Generation purchases: the Healthy Paws Vet Clinic play set.

Our dolls took to this set right away, wearing perfectly-scaled lab coats made using our #1025: She Blinded Me with Science pattern for 18 inch, 16 inch and 14 1/2 inch dolls.

Let's take a closer look at the the Healthy Paws Clinic.

This play set has two main playable areas — the exam room shown above, which includes a built-in kennel area with two cages, a sink-and-cabinet area with working drawers and shelving, and a space in the middle for a two-level gray plastic exam table.

The X-ray viewing light box on the back wall really lights up, and the set comes with two X-ray sheets that can be placed on the box, one for cats and one for dogs.

There is a plastic file folder container on the wall, with real cardstock folders that can be filled with any papers you like. We made copies of some of the kittens' real vet reports — scaled down to 26%, they fit perfectly in the folders.

On the sides of the unit — which does not fold up, alas — there are windows into the kennels and a working corkboard, which comes with a set of blunt push pins and a pair of adoption fliers.

The second main playable area is on the front of the set — an adorable waiting area with seats for patrons, and shelves for pet food and other saleable items. We love the mid-century modern color combo on this side. And those adorable faux-fiberglass shell chairs with the built-in table between them are to die for!

In typical Our Generation style, the set is loaded with accessories for maximum playability, including: 1 light box, 2 pet x-rays, 1 exam table, 1 pet scale, 1 kidney dish, 1 syringe, 1 thermometer, 1 stethoscope, 1 ear drop bottle, 1 pill bottle, 1 sponge, 2 elastic bandages, 1 cone-of-shame, 3 dog food cans, 9 cat food cans, 1 baby animal-feeding bottle, 1 jar with dog treats, 1 food bowl, 1 water bowl, 2 bags of pet food, 2 boxes of dog treats, 3 shampoo bottles, 1 soap pump, 1 clipboard with a real 20-sheet pad of vet notes, 1 pen, 4 file folders, 1 pet magazine, 2 pet posters, 4 blunt push pins and 1 waste basket.

One thing that does NOT come with the set is any animals. But that's fine, as Our Generation also sells lots of cute critters, such as the Boxer Puppy shown above.

As animal lovers, we've collected plenty of other doll-scale animals over the years who could certainly use occasional veterinary assistance. This little tuxedo kitten was a Christmas ornament...

...and this remarkably life-like tortoise came from the Safari Ltd bins at our local craft store.

We also couldn't resist dropping in a few items from other Our Generation purchases — like this microscope and set of test tubes from one of their recent STEM kits.

And why not repurpose this set as a medical clinic or science lab? Without any animals or pet food cans around, the playable areas here make a nicely blank canvas, open to all kinds of imaginative play.

And now we have to take a moment to show you the ultra-realistic paper towel dispenser next to the sink in the exam room. Isn't this marvelous?

It doesn't actually dispense the towels, of course — the paper, though real, is firmly fixed in place — but it's certainly right up there in wit and realism with the fixtures on the much pricier American Girl® Grand Hotel that we reviewed in a newsletter last year.

Like many of the larger 18 inch doll set-ups, the Vet Hospital is a little underscaled. Let's face it — play sets like these have to be. If the dolls are approximately one third human scale, a properly-scaled veterinary hospital would occupy most of your house.

The slightly smaller scale does mean that the Vet Hospital can also be used with smaller dolls, like the 16 inch A Girl for All Time® dolls and the 14 1/2 inch Wellie Wisher® and similar play dolls, shown above.

And of course our Pattern 1025: She Blinded Me with Science includes custom-scaled pattern pieces and directions for BOTH those smaller sizes. Hooray!
