Chanukah, the Jewish Festival of Lights, commemorates an uprising in Israel over two thousand years ago against a conqueror who tried to outlaw the practice of Judaism itself.
When the lamp in the restored Temple in Jerusalem burned for eight full days and nights on the single flask of kosher oil left in the city, the victorious Maccabees knew that a miracle had occurred. In Jewish homes all around the world, that miracle is still celebrated by lighting one additional candle in the Chanukah menorah (chanukiyah) each night for eight nights.
The images on our cards show our American Girl® dolls Rebecca Rubin, Lindsey Bergman and Pearl's own #41 lookalike with versions of a circa 1900 chanukiyah that we made back in 2015 using metallic paints, plastic pony beads, thin cardboard and a totally awesome knitting needle-embossed dollar store cookie sheet craft technique!
We released that craft as a tutorial and as a FREE printable template download and YouTube video guide, so you can make your dolls their own Chanukah menorahs to go with their new cards!

In 2022, the eighth night (gift night!) of Chanukah lands on December 25, which is of course Christmas. As children of a mixed-faith family, "Lee" and "Pearl" grew up celebrating both holidays — and our dolls do as well.
So let's have a look back at some of our favorite Christmas crafts...
Back in 2014, we created this FREE printable collection of retro Christmas cards for dolls, including matching envelopes and itty-bitty stamps, using charming vintage graphics from the Library of Congress collection.
In 2018, we added a FREE printable contemporary Christmas cards collection, featuring vibrant seasonal photographs from the creative professionals on unsplash.com.
Moving on from cards to actual gifts for dolls, here is our FREE (and easy-to-make) Holiday Stocking for Dolls pattern (based on the turn-before-you-sew technique from our Pattern 1022: Cookie Time Apron, Pinafore and Oven Mitt for 18 Inch Dolls — though you do NOT need to purchase Cookie Time to make the Holiday Stockings) and our FREE Easy Garter Stitch Slippers for 18 Inch Dolls knitting pattern.
That easy slipper knitting pattern is our MOST DOWNLOADED PATTERN EVER, but it's still completely FREE! Be sure to check out our Lunch with Lee & Pearl Facebook Live video from 2020 where "Lee" and "Pearl" raced each other to complete identical slippers — it's a hoot.
You can find all these Christmas crafts together in a 2018 December newsletter — or you can visit the FREE Stuff from Lee & Pearl web page to find them all listed separately, along with lots of other fun projects for dolls!
For fans of doll jewelry-making, we created these charming Christmas Tree Earrings back in 2018, after being inspired by similar human-size earrings at our local bead and jewelry-making store, The Artful Bead in Fort Worth, Texas.
If you are unfamiliar with basic jewelry-making techniques and want to try your hand at doll earrings like these, you can purchase our Introduction to Jewelry Making for Vinyl Play Dolls Craft eBook in the Lee & Pearl Etsy store.
In this fully illustrated guidebook, we'll walk you through all the basic techniques you need — and even show you how to carefully and safely pierce your doll's ears in your own home.
In a newsletter this past January, we showed you some of the fun scarves we created using clearance holiday ribbons from our local Michaels craft store.
Speaking of holidays in the craft store...
In that same newsletter, we talked about using animal Christmas ornaments as doll-scale pets, like the kitties that hide under our medieval lady's swirling skirts, or the dogs that our Chrissa takes for walks in the park.
Every one of these animals started out as a holiday ornament!
Sometimes animal ornaments are too small for pets, but make great stuffed animal toys for dolls, like this wee horse and elephant grouping. That elephant reminds us so much of a beloved Steiff animal that Pearl received as a Christmas gift one year — and still treasures!
Of course, many ornaments are meant to represent toys and need no alteration to be used as doll toys — like this tiny, glittery rocket ship.
Holiday ornament shopping is always one of our favorite parts of every holiday season!
We hope that you've enjoyed this round-up of Christmas and holiday crafts for dolls.
There's just ONE DAY left in our Cyber Week, so you know what's coming tomorrow. Stay tuned for the 2022 edition of our Holiday Mystery Bags, launching tomorrow (Friday) in our Etsy shop at 12 noon, central time!
And don't forget, all Lee & Pearl ballet and dance patterns as well as our newly-released Pattern 1984: Retro '80s Romper for 18" Dolls remain ON SALE at 20% off through Friday at midnight.
