Here at Lee & Pearl we keep our eyes and ears open for high-quality, doll scale garment fabrics — you know, the natural fiber materials that almost never show up at the big box stores. Earlier this year, our designer "Pearl" hit a mother lode of those hard-to find materials.

Word came down through the local costuming community that a Dallas-area menswear manufacturer was downsizing their warehouse, and that the long-time production manager and merchandiser/designer had decided to let go of a decades-long collection of garment fabric samples, nearly all of which were Italian-milled wool, linen, and luxury-blend suiting textiles of the highest quality used to manufacture elegant jackets and suits for stores like Saks and Nordstrom.

Needless to say, Pearl showed up at the warehouse bright and early the next morning to fill the Pearlmobile with every last scrap of doll weight and doll scale fabric she could find in that enormous collection!

Plaids, stripes, twills, herringbones, nubbly tweeds and silky smooth summer weights, soft moleskins and buttery velveteens — these fabrics did not disappoint!

Sorting through this collection felt like exploring a museum dedicated to European style and elegance. Most of the samples are 100% virgin wool — but even the silk, linen, and cotton blends are fabulous. These aren't like the suiting blends you might feel lucky to spot at a big box store, which always turn out to be mostly polyester with barely enough natural fiber thrown in to justify the label. Nearly all of these fabrics came with their original manufacturing labels attached — and just look at some of the names, places and fibers listed on those labels!

If you're curious, here's an article we found on the "magic of Biella," the renowned Northern Italian textile manufacturing city where most of these fabrics were milled. In Biella, they've been making exceptional woollen fabrics since 1245.

That's TWELVE — FORTY FIVE.

After loading the car up with these amazing Italian fabrics, I was able to convince the designer that I understood the value of textiles from Asia (mostly South Korea) and other locations, too — so she let me loose to explore those areas of the warehouse for treasures as well. Check out this gorgeous, subtle herringbone twill from Uruguay: it's a silk/linen/lambswool blend. Jackpot!

Most of the fabrics in the collection are in traditional menswear colors and patterns (which also happen to be traditional outerwear colors and patterns for plenty of historical women's costumes). So you'll see lots of beautiful browns and blues, subtle grays, and dramatic blacks.

But there are also a few glorious greens, autumnal rusts and pinks, and one choice stack of lovely lilacs, violets and purples.

And then there's this collection of cotton/linen blend stabilized t-shirt knits that came in an eye-popping array of over a dozen fun colors.

The designer showed us some of the jackets the company made with these jerseys, and were they ever '80s fabulous!

Nearly all the fabrics in this collection are 60" wide, and come in generous lengths between half-a-yard to almost-two-yards. We have not removed the labels or trimmed off the ends of these pieces as we want you to get every last available inch, so expect to see a few unusual cuts on one edge that might resemble sleeves or collars or whatever that last piece manufactured with the fabric before it was retired to the sample collection required.

What can you make with these fabrics? Consider Lee & Pearl jacket and suit patterns like L&P 1964 Darling Doris and L&P 1943 Molly Waves Goodbye.

You can also try pants and skirt patterns like L&P 1004 Boy Style Pants and L&P 1041 Slim Skirts.

With some of the finer suitings, you could make gorgeous dresses from L&P 1038 Bow Front Dress, and from some of the sturdier fabrics, you can make a range of hat patterns like L&P 1008 Classic Ball Cap, L&P 1006 Patrol Cap, and L&P 2021 Glengarry Hat.

You can also make fabulous versions of our historical patterns L&P 3052 Pirates, Patriots & Princes and L&P 3001 A Late Medieval Lady's Wardrobe.

We made this version of the medieval kirtle using a summer weight wool suiting fabric from Pearl's treasured vintage Paron NYC collection.

If you feel like taking one of our patterns in a completely different direction, we LOVE seeing the L&P 1025 She Blinded Me with Science Lab Coat made up in garment fabrics as a lightweight jacket or coat!

And that's just what you can do with Lee & Pearl patterns. These fabrics are also ideal for a range of historical garments, jackets, capes, coats and hats from any era, and of course, human-scaled clothes like hats, handbags, color-blocked separates, vests and other accessories.

We've even seen gorgeous quilts made with suiting wools, plaids and flannels.
