Today, we're going to take you behind the scenes for a detailed look at the making of that Grand Gala Giveaway ensemble.
We started with the doll, of course.
When Pearl first started collecting American Girl dolls, she became obsessed with Sonali, and wound up placing eBay bids on THREE separate dolls in the same week.
Boy was she surprised when she won all three of those auctions.
Surprised, but not upset. We still think that Sonali is one of the most beautiful dolls that American Girl has ever made. And we're not alone she's one of the most coveted dolls on the secondary market.
Over the years, our Sonali sisters have made many appearances in Lee & Pearl pattern images. And with good reason: they look great in everything.
Here's Sonali #1 in a holiday-themed version of our Pattern 2021: Glengarry Hat for 18 Inch Dolls.
So you've seen our Sonali dolls popping up in various Lee & Pearl ensembles before.
All but ONE of them, that is.
One of those three dolls was simply too beautiful and too perfect to use for mere modeling duties. This doll came to us in her American Girl hospital box with tight limbs, flawless skin and an amazing cascade of long, soft brown-black curls.
She was so beautiful that Pearl couldn't bear to take her out of her hospital box, and she's been sitting there ever since, waiting for an ensemble worthy of her perfection.
With our Pattern 1076: Grand Gala Dropped Waist Ballgown, we finally had that ensemble.
With the perfect doll and perfect pattern in hand, Pearl spent several days tracking down the perfect materials.
From left to right, here are those materials
1. For the lining, we used one of our beautiful silk organzas: #80 Old Ivory (found in the Spring Morning collection);
2. For the bodice, we found a gorgeous cream-and-gold brocade in the special occasion aisle at JoAnn. This material is still available and we've included a photo of the bolt end below if you want to order some of your own. Bring a coupon, though. This fabric is not cheap.
3. For the skirt, we used a lovely, floaty crinkle polyester silky. We bought a bolt of this fabric in the LA garment district years ago for a pre-Lee & Pearl project. Last year, we finally let go of the remaining yardage, cutting generous lengths for our Mystery Bag sale. If you bought one of those bags, check your stash you might already have this fabric!
4. For the petticoat tiers and an extra over-skirt layer we used several shades of off-white and beige sparkle net from JoAnn.
5. For the opera-length gloves, we used a silvery oyster white mystique spandex (lycra) performance fabric.
6. And for the belt and the shoulder straps, we used a 3/8" antique ivory grosgrain ribbon and a length of beige 1/8" skinny elastic.
Between the pattern and the fabrics we were able to put together an amazing ballgown ensemble with a ribbon belt and evening-length gloves, and included couture details like a silk lining and silk skirt support, a hand-stitched hem and hand-understitching along the neckline.
But then, we needed more sparkles!
Even though we have a large collection of crystal rhinestones in the Lee & Pearl workroom (thank you, Los Angeles fabric district closeouts) we did NOT have exactly the right color to go with these gorgeous materials.
But we knew that our favorite jewelry supplier, Fire Moutain Gems, provides accurate color representations of their products, so we trusted that their Swarovski® flat back crystals in Light Colorado Topaz would be just the right color for this project.
And they were.
Pearl applied three different sizes of these gorgeous, flashing crystals to the bodice and net overskirt by hand, painstakingly, and all the way around.
This process is easiest to do while the net overskirt is still flat and ungathered and can be laid on top of a sheet of wax paper or at least before you've stitched the center back seam.
And if you use E6000 for a permanent bond, like we do, please don't forget to wear protective gear. We're not kidding permanently applying crystals is a serious business and requires serious protection.
But they look SO PRETTY when you're done!
These gorgeous shoes were a lucky accident. Pearl made them as a technical trial after a class at Costume College offered by the ladies behind Sassy Feet, using a pair of white American Girl pumps and proprietary Sassy Feet materials that are unfortunately no longer available.
The shoes are finished with multiple coats of Sassy Feet sealer for permanency. There won't be any messy glitter falling off of these shoes!
Finally, what's a Gala gown without Gala jewelry?
We just love giving custom paint jobs to inexpensive party favors using deluxe paints from the Jacquard Lumière line.
For our Sonali's tiara, we used multiple coats of Metallic Gold, Old Brass, Metallic Russet and Halo Violet-Gold Lumière paints over a white-primered tiara, then finished with a gloss sealant and more Light Colorado Topaz Swarovski crystals.
For our doll's earrings, Pearl crafted gold bead drop attachments for a pair of American Girl brand studs, using the techniques and tutorials in our Introduction to Jewelry Making for Vinyl Play Dolls eBook craft guide.
And that's it that's how you create an ensemble worthy of this doll's unique beauty!
Now that she finally has the perfect outfit, we want her to have the perfect home as well. This doll is too beautiful to stay in her hospital box, dreaming of a glamorous life beyond the Lee & Pearl workroom...

Don't forget all our 100% silk organza curated kits and by-the-yard listings are now ON SALE in our Etsy shop through Friday, 12/6.
By jumping in and making an offer on an entire traditional Korean garment atelier estate collection, we were able to get these beautiful fabrics at an extraordinary discount, and we've passed that discount on to our friends. Our everyday price for these silks is already near wholesale. With that price slashed by 20% this week, our silks are now listed at a price you will have a hard time ever matching again.

Once you've worked with 100% silk organza, you will never want to go back to the slippery, hard-to-work-with polyester organza.
Silk organza is a lightweight but very crisp and sturdy translucent fabric that doesn't unravel easily, cuts and pins with ordinary sharp tools, runs through the sewing machine like a dream, steams gently into billowing folds or presses absolutely flat like paper.
We've shared some of our silk organza doll projects with you before, like this super-chic translucent hat-and-coat ensemble that we made for our American Girl Melody.
We also shared pictures of the human-size translucent coat we made for ourselves using Vogue Pattern 1347 and two tones of silk organza (#29 Tomato and #97 Golden Russet, both found in the Autumn Leaves collection.)
Now we want to share Pearl's latest silk organza sewing project, a super-easy holiday party wrap that she made using Vogue Pattern 9291.
We think this project turned out beautifully as well, and it was super easy to make. Pearl is not a swift sewer, but she was able to put this one together in one leisurely evening.
Pearl used one of our favorite colors of silk organza #1 Mushroom, a peach/black duotone found in the Shifting Sands collection which created a shimmering cloud of folds and puffs, and beautifully set off the steel butterfly buckle from her vintage collection.
We highly recommend this pattern if you're looking for a fun and easy silk organza project.
The pattern calls for four yards of organza, but Pearl found that by adding an inconspicuous center back seam (completely invisible in the finished garment) she was able to cut it out of only two yards. The pattern is also generously sized, and very easy to alter to different sizes as needed.
Best of all, this pattern takes advantage of two unique features of silk organza fabric first, its almost architectural crispness, and second, the ease with which that crispness can be softened and reshaped using steam.
Look at the picture of the garment above again. Doesn't it look like Pearl must have spent hours draping and tacking all those beautiful puffs and folds?
Nope.
All of that intricate shaping took less than one minute, and the only tools required were the fingers of one hand and an ordinary steam iron, pre-heated thoroughly so it wouldn't spit or leak.
That's an actual picture of the shaping in progress!
Pearl just placed the finished garment on a flat surface, scrunched around in the silk until she liked the shape, then hit it with a blast of steam and let it cool in place. But we're not going to tell anyone at our upcoming holiday parties how easy this was to make and you shouldn't either!

You may have noticed that our finished evening wrap has a purplish tinge that is not visible in the picture of the fabric.
That's another wonderful thing about translucent silk organza you can layer different colors and linings to create new and different tones.
That purplish tinge comes from the lining fabric that we chose a deep, plummy figured China silk.
Guess what? That China silk, which comes in a range of different colors and patterns, is also part of the giant estate collection of traditional Korean silks that gave us the silk organzas.
Even though we've posted over one hundred beautiful bolts of organza in our Etsy shop, sometimes it feels like we have barely scratched the surface of this amazing collection.
Here are a few of the 100% silk fabrics that we have yet to catalog, price or post. Look for these gorgeous fabrics to start appearing in our Etsy shop in 2020...!
Above, we're showing a collection of very lightweight silk shantungs, and a group of marvelously doll-scale strié silks including a scrumptious dark red stripe.
Below, we've got delicate 22 inch wide bolts of figured satin, and a pair of bengaline-like fabrics that we don't even have names for.
And then wonder of wonders the collection also includes several boxes of 15 inch hand-loom width silks in glorious colors, many still wrapped in delicate rice paper sleeves.
Aren't these just lovely? If anyone knows if these fabrics have traditional Korean names or uses, we'd love to hear about them.
It looks like 2020 is going to be an exciting year for fabric in the Lee & Pearl Etsy store.
DAY THREE Wednesday, December 4, 2019
As a special Cyber Week bonus, we are thrilled to present a NEW Lee & Pearl Pattern!
Introducing L&P Pattern 1076: Grand Gala Dropped Waist Ballgown with Evening Gloves and Russian Ballet Bodice with Neo-Classical Tutu for 18 Inch Dolls.
And here's some more big news: in honor of Cyber Week and all the holiday gift sewing that we hope you have planned this pattern is currently ON SALE at 20% OFF through next Thursday, December 12, 2019.
CLICK HERE to go to Pattern 1076: Grand Gala Dropped Waist Ballgown with Evening Gloves and Russian Ballet Bodice with Neo-Classical Tutu in the Lee & Pearl Etsy store ON SALE at 20% off through Thursday, December 12, 2019.
She stands at the door, breathless yet poised, ready to make her entrance to the Grand Gala ballroom...
It's the night of the ballet company Grand Gala and our little dancer enchants the crowd with her guest solo, wearing an elegant, longline Russian ballet bodice and graceful Neo-Classical tutu.
After her dance is done, she hurries backstage to change into her party dress a stunning dropped waist ballgown with built-in tulle petticoats, a ribbon belt and luxurious, opera-length evening gloves.
Now all eyes are upon her as she enters the ballroom, ready to dance the night away...
We are thrilled to present this latest addition to our collection of just-like-the-real-thing, mix-and-match ballet costume patterns.
We're equally thrilled to include an adaptation of the traditional, two-piece ballet bodice and tutu to a modern ballgown, sharing the same gorgeous silhouette, but featuring a simplified, one-piece construction.
Our Russian Ballet Bodice, or "longline" bodice, features elegant curved princess seams and a wide scooped, strapless neckline with a slightly lowered back. Fully lined and fitted through the hipline, this sleek style is designed to fit seamlessly over our hip-hugging ballet tutus both the Neo-Classical tutu in this pattern, and the Classical (or "Pancake") tutu in our Pattern 1073: Prima Ballerina.
Our Neo-Classical Tutu is a lyrical combination of the Classical and Romantic styles, with the graceful Romantic bell skirt falling from the hipline, like a Classical tutu, instead of the waistline.
The elegant bell shape of the skirt is built up from gradated rows of gathered tulle, stitched to a wide, curved lower basque, which is then attached with a neatly piped edge to both an upper basque and a fitted, built-in panty exactly like the real thing!
This modern hybrid style is perfect for romantic recital dancers and elegant chamber ballet soloists. For even more flexibility, we've included cutting directions for two different lengths both the classical knee-length and a longer, ankle-grazing ballet length.
But our flexibility does not end there!
As part of our mix-and-match ballet pattern collection, the Neo-Classical Tutu can be worn with either of our Pattern 1072 or Pattern 1073 pointed-front bodices, while the Russian Ballet Bodice creates a uniquely seamless look when combined with our Pattern 1073 Classical Tutu and our Pattern 1074 Ballet Costume Accessory Tutu Plates.
As you can see below, the Classical tutu basque is completely hidden by the Russian Bodice, so you no longer have to worry about matching the bodice and basque fabrics.
Instead, we've matched the bodice to a pair of swappable, easy-to-make Pattern 1074 tutu plates and our ballerina is ready for her Nutcracker Gingerbread debut in the same plain white tutu we've used for our Snowflake and Flower dancers, just like a ballet designer would do in a real ballet costume shop!
Our Dropped Waist Ballgown shares the same beautiful silhouette as the Neo-Classical ballet ensemble, but the gown features a simplified one-piece construction that's both easier to make and easier to play with.
The bell-shaped skirt is built in the same manner as the tutu, with gradated fabric and net petticoat layers attached to a hidden skirt support. But the skirt support is then attached directly to the lined bodice, without any upper basque, panty or piping.
Such a time saver!
The graceful ballgown skirt just grazes the top of the doll's foot the perfect length for dancing the night away. Leave the bodice strapless, or attach the same dainty elastic or ribbon straps that keep the ballet bodices securely in place.
Finish your ballgown with an optional Ribbon Belt attached with a simple slider buckle, and then complete your girl's elegant look with a pair of sleek, over-the-elbow Evening Gloves, the perfect accessory for any formal ensemble.
Our glove pattern is both form-fitting and easy to follow. Once you've mastered the steps, you may find yourself making a dozen pretty pairs!
Our Russian Ballet Bodice is rated Intermediate for carefully mirrored and turned curved neckline seams and limited hand finishing work.
Our Neo-Classical Tutu with Basque and Panty is rated Intermediate for limited hand finishing work, elastic insertion and working with tulle particularly as we strongly recommend the use of a rotary cutter to cut the skirt tiers, and rotary cutters should only be used by careful sewists, and never by or around children.
Our Dropped Waist Ballgown is rated Intermediate for curved seams, limited hand finishing and working with tulle.
Our Evening Gloves are rated Intermediate for stretch fabric sewing though if you download our FREE Sew Easy with Spandex ebook, we hope you'll find these gloves are actually Easy.

DAY FOUR Thursday, December 5, 2019
Change of plans, folks.
At the start of this week, the plan was to showcase our FREE holiday gift patterns, tutorials and printables in today's newsletter.
And we've got some wonderful FREE holiday goodies to share. But we've shared most of them in a very thorough previous newsletter and we have a whole page on our website dedicated to our FREE downloads and another page of FREE tutorials. We encourage you to have a look at all those pages as soon as you've finished reading this newsletter.
But today, there's something else we need to talk about...
Fabric.
In the excitement of the new pattern and the silk sale and the beautiful Grand Gala Giveaway doll and gown, it occurs to us that we have not properly shared with you the truly awesome scope and glory of the fabrics that we are currently preparing to share with our friends in neatly wrapped, firmly stuffed Priority Mail MYSTERY BAGS.
The 2019 edition of the Lee & Pearl Mystery Bag Sale will go live in our Etsy store at 1PM (EST) on Friday, December 6, 2019. Set your clocks, that's TOMORROW!
Our Mystery Bag sales are always popular events. One morning-launched edition sold out before folks on the west coast were awake. (That's why we launch them in the afternoon now.)
They're popular for good reason the first year we shared many beautiful materials that had been intended for Lee & Pearl swimsuit and special occasion kits, and the next year we shared a huge percentage of Pearl's private collection of doll, garment and professional costuming materials.
But this year, the fabrics we have to share eclipse all previous sales.
Over the last few months, Pearl has acquired a pair of awe-inspiring fabric collections.
The first came from a stylish home sewist in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, who spent decades outfitting herself and her extended family in beautiful, hand-made garments. We acquired this lady's amazing pattern collection as well, and it includes literally thousands of Vogue and other high-end, high-style brands. This woman had taste and knew a beautiful pattern and a beautiful piece of fabric when she saw it. And when she saw it, she bought it.
We have called this purchase an "estate collection" in the past but it's more accurately an epic de-stash. The stylish home sewist is very much still alive and stitching. She has moved into an assisted-living facility, close to her children and grand-children, with her sewing machine, a stack of choice fabrics and her very favorite patterns at her side.
And guess what her very favorite patterns are 18 inch doll patterns. Yes, this unbelievably stylish and talented woman is ONE OF US, and we are honored to carry forth her decades-long treasury of fabrics and share them with all of you.
The second collection of fabrics is more bittersweet. On the night of October 20, 2019, an EF3 tornado tore through Pearl's favorite block in the entire Metroplex the Dallas Perth Street fabric district.
The devastation was terrible, and with the exception of a few stores that miraculously survived almost untouched tornados are weird likely to be permanent.
We have spoken with a number of owners, and we are relieved to report that both well-deserved retirements and insurance payments are helping to keep the emotional damage to a minimum. When we went to the liquidation sales a few weeks after the storm, everyone seemed to be in remarkably good spirits.
And the liquidation sales were amazing.
Pearl filled her car once again with bolts and bolts and bolts of beautiful garment-weight fabrics the kind of fabrics that are so hard to find at most local big box stores. These fabrics were still neatly wrapped in their plastic shipping bags and though some may have been to Oz and back, they are all treasures that we are thrilled to be able to pass along.
So set your alarm for 1PM (EST) tomorrow, pour yourself a cup of tea, and take a few minutes now to browse just a few of the beautiful materials that we can't wait to share with you.
Like these bolts of luxurious, soft faux suede...
This amazing sweater knit...
These lightweight, heathered wools...
This gabardine...
These checks and houndstooth plaids...
These homespun and twill cotton shirtings...
These butter-soft modern jerseys...
These vintage double knits...
These fine-wale corduroys...
These vintage suitings...
This burn-out velvet...
These vintage jerseys...
These summer-weight seersucker checks and stripes...
